Southland is situated at the south and west of the South Island has Invercargill as its largest city.  Fiordland national park is New Zealand’s largest national park and although isolated, is very beautiful with stunning vistas of beautiful unblemished fiords with amazingly good fishing and clear water. Stewart Island is separated from the south island by the Foveaux strait and has its own unique blend of flora and fauna.Fiordland has the highest rainfall in the country which averages between 6 ½-7 meters per year.  Southland contains Browne Falls, New Zealand’s highest water fall and lake Haroko is the deepest in the country.  For those that love Tramping and Camping the Milford and Hollyford Tracks are simply amazing. Lake Te Anau and lake Manapouri are both very beautiful glacial lakes.  There is a wet mountain climate to the west of the region. The weather is cooler and wetter than the rest of New Zealand and the southern lights can be seen during the winter months.  The coastal regions have cool summers and mild winters.  The region’s economy comes from agriculture, fishing, tourism, forestry and energy resources like coal and hydroelectric power. Milford sound is the most accessible of all of Southlands sounds and is a worthwhile excursion for all those who like isolated lush fiords with crystal clear water , great fishing or hunting, pure clean air and amazing scenery
